Michael Pattinson

Hi! I am Michael, a Valley Christian student who is interested in STEM and educating others.

Things I Like

Arduino Uno R4

Being a Maker

Whenever I have a random idea, and it seems possible, I figure out how to build it :3. Like this WordPress site, I wondered how hard it is to build a free website, so I just did! I like the Arduino(except for pricing…) ecosystem, and Raspberry Pi. Although I am starting to dive in deeper and experiment with other microcontrollers ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

ValleyTori

I believe that educating people is really important, and that the world would be a much better place with education. So I founded ValleyTori with my friends, a free STEM education project, hoping to help teach students and help them learn become more curious and build themselves.

Automation

Yeah I pulled this image off of Google’s first page, so credits to “Process Excellence Network”, but I think automation and designing systems is really cool. For example, like a drone that can count birds so we can track year over year population and prioritize conservation resources, or cheaper recycling so we can keep people out of dangerous industries and improve the environment while helping consumers and employees alike.

Cool things I have done

Bellarmine Summer Robotics

I was interested in STEM before their summer program, but after the VEX class I became really interested in robotics. Our team got second, only due to overheating motors, and as a major contributor I really liked how things were and wanted to continue.

MATE ROV Scout

In the Valley Christian Junior High’s MATE ROV Scout program, our school had multiple teams setup for the MATE competition. We had to build an ROV, which turned out to be half easy half difficult. Our team placed alright, and got an award for our engineering presentation, but most important of all we learned teamwork and time management.

SGC Sandbox and Pico CTF

These were two smaller cybersecurity competitions, that I participated as team lead of CyberClashers with my friends, as a part of Valley’s Cyberquest team. We got 3rd for SGC, and 174 out of over 4,000 active teams for Pico(but over 9,000 teams total, although many did not compete). I learned about core cybersecurity concepts, and team management as we competed against other high school students and college students.

ISS Space Program

I participated in the ISS Level 2 program at VCHS, where we try to build out and get an experiment working. The class is mostly figure it out yourselves, so me and my corner ended up working together to try to piece to gather images and schematics leading to an ultimately fun experience as we built out our experiment.

Underwater Drone

I really like the ocean, and robotics, and in MATE ROV I learned the foundations of what I needed along with where to find extra resources on building submarines at home… so I built one! I believe my coolest home project is my homemade submarine, built off of the CPS 3 course it uses an Arduino Uno + tether with a 3 motor design for movement, and overall I learned a lot while building it.

ValleyTori

ValleyTori is a project built by me and my friends, and is definitely still in progress. But we are learning a lot! Our goal is to get pocket money to fund cool projects, and teach people, while learning+teaching as we do. We already have figured out a ton, and overall it is really cool(at least in my opinion).

My view on AI

Overall I think Ai is a really cool tool, and can definitely be a good helpful accelerator.

But there definitely is money behind overhyping Ai, and we need to be mindful that it is tech not magic, and is not perfect. We still cannot fully export every decision to Ai becoming “3rd party thinkers”, and still need to check its work.

I definitely want to learn more about Ai, but still want to be careful to make sure that I actually learn. I think that using Ai efficiently is important, and that we need to make sure that Ai does not make us worse. I overall believe that Ai powered tools are good, but think that learning how to properly apply them is extremely important to Ai use.
